Greens Back Ladywell Fields Himalayan Balsam Massacre
Mike, me and local volunteers in the River Ravensbourne on Sunday pulling up the dreaded Himalayan Balsam. If not removed, it covers the riverbank to the detriment of native species, then when it dies off in winter the banks are left bare and prone to erosion. Hence Nick Harvey organised 'Operation Sam' to try and get rid of as much of it as possible before it seeded. It grows incredibly quickly. We were clearing it from the recently planted river bank by the new hospital building, where the native plants were already in danger of being completely obliterated by the balsam. Hopefully the yellow flag iris etc will now reassert itself. Really enjoyable morning splashing about in the river. Sorry, couldn't resist the little dig in the title.
